Abstract
The aim of the present study was carried out to investigate the antidiarrheal
and antimicrobial potential of both ethanol and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Mikania
scandens .In vivo Antidiarrheal activity of M.scandens ethanol and aqueous aerial extracts
at a dose of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg BW were studied using experimentally induced
castor oil diarrheal in Wister rats of both sexes and compared to standard drug loperamide
(3mg/kg p.o). During this study different parameters like time of onset of diarrhoea, total
nos. of faecal output (frequency of defecation) and weight of wet faeces, nos. of wet
faeces were assessed. In vitro Antimicrobial activity (zone of inhibition, minimum
inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, minimum fungal
concentration) were performed by using four bacterial strains.( gram positive, & gram
negative) and two fungal strains. Data were analysed using one way ANOVA. (Analysis
of Variance). The results of antidiarrheal studies showed that over four hours, both the
extracts significantly protected
