Abstract
Surgical site infection has always been a major complication of surgery and trauma. The present study was aimed to assess various risk factors associated with SSI. It consisted of 100 cases of laparotomies operated at G.R.M.C, Gwalior from July’ 2006 to Sept.’ 2008. It is observed that incidence of wound infection, peritoneal infection or both is 24% and there is a considerably higher incidence of wound and peritoneal infection in Emergency surgery (44%) than those operated electively (4%). Commonest infecting organisms are Esch. Coli followed by Klebsiella, Staph aureus, Coagulase negative Staph. Pseudomonas, Proteus and Streptococci in decreasing order of frequency.
