Abstract
This study examined the strategies that should be adopted to mitigate the effects of cattle rustling in Samburu County. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design targeting 562 participants. Both stratified and purposive sampling was used in which 131 respondents were selected for the study. Questionnaires, Focused Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews were used to gather primary data for the study. Quantitative data collected was analysed by use of descriptive statistics with the help of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 2.0 while qualitative data was used to supplement interpretation of quantitative data. The analysed data was then presented by use of tables. The study identified six strategies that can be implemented to mitigate the effects of cattle rustling in Samburu County. These include providing alternative livelihoods to the members of the community especially the youth, instituting favourable administrative policies in the area, providing support for school fees for learners, introducing peace clubs in schools, making primary education compulsory and deploying of Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) when necessity demands. The study recommends that the authorities implement these strategies to mitigate the effects of cattle rustling so that the people of Samburu have better access to education.
