Abstract
Climate-resilient tourism planning in mountain regions requires timely, spatially detailed and socially relevant information. Himachal Pradesh’s tourism sector is exposed to changing temperature and precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, landslides, floods, water stress, ecological degradation, infrastructure vulnerability and socio-economic disparities. This study examines the role of data systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), drones and sensor-based monitoring in strengthening climate-resilient tourism planning in Himachal Pradesh. The analysis shows that tourism planning requires four broad forms of information including climate data, environmental data, socio-economic data and infrastructure data. Remote sensing and earth observation can support land-use and environmental monitoring like drones can assist in observing disaster-prone and inaccessible sites, AI and machine learning can strengthen predictive analytics, IoT-enabled sensors can track environmental variables and GIS can integrate spatial information for decision-making. The study argues that digital technologies should not be treated as isolated technical tools. They must be embedded in governance systems, district-level planning, community participation and policy implementation. The study concludes that data-driven tourism planning can help Himachal Pradesh move from reactive crisis management toward anticipatory climate resilience.
