Influence of Trade Union Activities on Employee Performance Among Medical Doctors in Public Sector in Nairobi County, Kenya

Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to establish the influence of trade union activities on employee performance among public service medical doctors in Nairobi County, Kenya. The specific study objectives were: union organizing, collective bargaining, contract administration and union-management cooperation activities on employee performance. The study was anchored on revolutionary theory and supported by evolutionary, industrial jurisprudence and Gandhi theories of trade union. The target population was 789 medical doctors and 21 top managers. To avoid bias, probability’s stratified sampling technique was used to classify the population into various strata, based on specialization. Simple random sampling was used to pick 327 medical doctors from each strata. Non-probability’s purposive sampling technique was used to pick 21 top managers. The study employed mixed methods research approach and adopted convergent parallel mixed methods design. A structured questionnaire was utilized to collect quantitative data from medical doctors, which was statistically analyzed using descriptive and inferential tools with the aid of SPSS (Version 26.0). Interview guide collected qualitative data from top managers. Both quantitative and qualitative data were subjected to descriptive analysis. Hypotheses were tested using regression analysis at a 0.05 level of significance. Qualitative data was thematically analyzed and presented in narrative form using text. The study found that union organizing, collective bargaining, contract administration and union-management cooperation activities had a positive and significant influence on the performance of public service medical doctors in Nairobi County, Kenya. Data were presented using tables and figures.
