Sustainable Competitive Advantage Amongst Commercial Banks in Nigeria: Employee Resourcing Strategy as a Panacea

Abstract
This study examined the effect of employee resourcing strategy on the competitive advantage of commercial banks in Nigeria. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. The population comprised 521 permanent employees of six selected commercial banks, namely First Bank, First City Monument Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Ecobank and United Bank for Africa, across Uyo, Eket and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial Districts. Taro Yamane formula was used in determining the sample size for the study. A sample size of 226 employees was determined. Simple random sampling techniques was used. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistical tool. The findings showed that retention strategy and human resource planning were positively and significantly related to competitive advantage. It was concluded that effective retention practices and human resource planning are important for enhancing competitive advantage of commercial banks in Nigeria. As such, it was recommended among other things that management of commercial banks in Nigeria should prioritise retention programmes that keep high-performing employees, thereby supporting stable service quality and superior advantage.
