Abstract
Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis (ISCM) is a rare but severe complication of advanced malignant disease and is associated with a poor prognosis. The incidence of ISCM appears to be increasing, possibly because of advances in diagnostic imaging and the growing availability of cancer treatments that prolong patient survival. Early and accurate recognition is crucial, as neurological deterioration may become irreversible. However, the optimal management of ISCM remains uncertain because treatment decisions must be individualized according to the patient’s neurological status, extent of systemic disease, primary tumor, and overall clinical condition, while comparative controlled studies remain lacking. Greater clinical awareness may facilitate diagnosis before irreversible neurological deficits develop and thereby improve the effectiveness of palliative treatment. Therefore, we carried out this retrospective research of 5 observations of ISCM, associated with a detailed review of the literature.
