Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global epidemic associated with severe vascular complications development. Diabetic neuropathy is the most common chronic complication of DM that worsens patients’ quality of life and prognosis. Therefore, studies dealing with DM and diabetic neuropathy underlying mechanisms are extremely relevant. This review discusses current views on possible association between vitamin D deficiency and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is reported that Vitamin D is involved in the development of DPN in type 2 diabetic patients, and vitamin D deficiency is very likely to be associated with DPN in type 2 diabetic patients. Further interventional studies are needed to validate the association between vitamin D deficiency and DPN.
