Reappraisal of Spectrum of Benign Breast Diseases in Women of Reproductive Age

Abstract
Objective: To assess the prevalence of various benign breast diseases (BBD) in females of reproductive age in a
corporate hospital of Kolkata. Methodology: This is a prospective cohort study of female patients of reproductive age
with breast problems visiting the surgical OPD and breast clinic of Peerless hospital and B. K. Roy Research centre,
Kolkata. This study was conducted in a period of about two years starting from September 2017 to August 2019. All
female patients in reproductive age visiting the Surgical OPD of this hospital with breast problems were included in
the study. Patients with obvious clinical features of malignancy or those who on work up were diagnosed as carcinoma
were excluded from the study. Results: A total of 108 patients were included in the study. About 48% (52/108)
patients belonged to 4th decade of life (age between: 31-40 years) followed by 36% (39/108) from 3rd decade (age
between: 21–30 years). Fibrocystic disease was the most common benign breast disease, seen in 31.5% (34/108) of
patients, followed by fibroadenoma in about 29.6% (32/108) patients. Conclusion: Benign Breast Diseases (BBD) are
common problems in females of reproductive age. Fibrocystic disease is the commonest of all benign breast disease in
our set up mostly seen in 2nd and 3rd decades of life. Fibroadenoma of the breast is the next common BBD whose
incidence is highest in 3rd decade of life age.
