Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an organism known to cause respiratory tract infections which can lead to serious life threatening complications. Although these infections can be readily treated with antibiotics, drug resistance in S. pneumoniae poses a significant threat. Multi drug resistant strains of S. pneumoniae which emerged over a couple of decades ago were almost absent in India till the recent years. However, the prevalence of these strains is on the rise in our country. We report a case of community acquired pneumonia caused by a multi drug resistant strain of S. pneumoniae serotype 19F and summarize the rising trend of multi drug resistance in pneumococci with a concise review.
