Abstract
Alcoholism is a global public health problem with numerous healths, social, legal, psychological and physical
consequences. Excessive Alcohol consumption affects virtually every major organ system, and has significant serious
consequences on the haematopoietic system affecting blood cells, their progenitors and clotting components. The study
was conducted on 28 non alcoholics and 56 alcoholic subjects (28-moderate, 28- severe alcoholics). The results showed
maximum alcoholics in the age group of 31-40 years. Mean duration of alcoholism was 11.8 years. In alcoholics
Haemoglobin, PCV and platelet count was significantly decreased, MCV was increased. Leucocytosis and leukopenia
were seen. Peripheral smear showed increase in macrocytic anaemia. Bone marrow examination showed predominant
megaloblastic picture. In conclusion alcoholism has profound effects on haematological and haemostatic parameters in
the blood. Duration of alcohol consumption correlated with changes in alcohol parameters. Some of the results in
conjunction with the clinical history would also be useful in diagnosing and management of alcoholics. Abstinence can
reverse many of alcohols’ effect on haematopoiesis and blood cell function. These simple and affordable investigations
help in early detection of complications of alcoholism.
